The
middle instrument of the brass group, pitched below
the trumpet and the horn and above the tuba. The name
itself is the augmentative form of the Italian word
tromba, trumpet, and therefore means "big
trumpet." It is constructed of mainly cylindrical
bore, incorporating a movable slide which allows a continuous
glissando (slide) in pitch over a span of half an octave.
The longer the tube length, the lower the note. All
the notes of the chromatic scale are therefore available
by placing the slide in any of seven basic positions,
and blowing a harmonic series of notes built upon each
basic note.
