About The Trombone Directory

This site provides information supplied by trombonists throughout the world. It originally started as a project on Ian Appleton's home page at carrera.demon.co.uk but has become so popular that it now warrants something more substantial. Here you can find not only other trombonists of various grades but also links to other trombone and music related sites. As some of the people listed use the FREE ICQ internet chat program, a link is provided for download of the latest software.

Trombone
Compass of the alto trombone
Brass

The middle instrument of the brass group, pitched below the trumpet and the horn and above the tuba. The name itself is the augmentative form of the Italian word tromba, trumpet, and therefore means "big trumpet." It is constructed of mainly cylindrical bore, incorporating a movable slide which allows a continuous glissando (slide) in pitch over a span of half an octave. The longer the tube length, the lower the note. All the notes of the chromatic scale are therefore available by placing the slide in any of seven basic positions, and blowing a harmonic series of notes built upon each basic note.

Any of a class of musical instruments made of brass or other metal, including trumpets, bugles, trombones, and horns. The function of a reed is served by the lips, shaped and tensed by the mouthpiece, acting as a valve releasing periodic pulses of pressurized air into the tube.In the symphony orchestra the brass instruments are the trumpet, french horn, trombone and tuba.
